"Healthy, Overcomers, Purposed with an Eternal Perspective"
How long did it take you to publish your first book?
My first book, A Heart of Devotion, was released by Moody Publishers on January 1, 2005. It was just two months after I was married and I remember thinking how that particular new year was ushering in two milestone moves in my life. I played around with my manuscript for about three years before I truly became committed and disciplined myself to finish. Part of the reason was that I joined a writing and critique group. From that point, I finished writing, editing, and submitting my manuscript in a period of about nine months.

How many books have you published to date?
I’ve written 8 novels, 1 novella, 1 non-fiction (a 30-day devotion) and contributed to 4 anthologies. Additionally, I created For My Daughter: A Journal of Mom’s Life, Love & Wisdom and a project for writers titled, Think It. Ink It. A Planner for Non-Fiction.

What projects are you currently working on?

Can I insert a laugh here? LOL! Let’s just say that I have several works in progress on my laptop, but I haven’t committed fully to any of them. Once I do, I hope to get the ball rolling at least by the end of the year. In my mind, we should still be in March 2017. It just goes to show that time waits for no-one. I’ll be finished with a project soon. Real soon. I want my readers to bug me and hold me to that.

Who is your favorite author?
I can’t choose one person. I read across a variety of genres, both male and female depending on what I’m feeling at the time. Reading makes authors better writers.

What is the most challenging part about writing?
Two things can be challenging for me personally: finding the uninterrupted time to write and making sure a story doesn’t lag in the middle. Storytelling is an art and can be more challenging than people realize. My goal with every book is for a reader to stay pulled into the story from the first page to the last.

What tips do you have for new and aspiring authors?
Stick with it. Writing can sometimes seem like a long marathon as opposed to a fast sprint. You may get tired. You may feel like you’re about to stall in the middle. You may think that you never should’ve started this “race” in the first place. But with perseverance, skill, discipline, and grit you can not only write a book, but successfully market it.

What is your favorite scripture?
Luke 1:45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her.

What do you do when you are not writing?

Everything! My family (husband and 3 children) keeps me busy and there’s never a time when I’m not juggling several balls and schedules. But when I have time away from wife and mommy duties I love binge watching Netflix and the shows I recorded on DVR, and catching dinner and great conversations with my girlfriends.

When She Loves

(with stories by Tia McCollors and other best-selling authors)

1. What does your writing process look like?

The writing process for me is pretty simple. I write daily in my journal and if I'm out and feeling inspired, I'll write in my memo pad on my telephone. Before I sit down to write a blog post, I seek God and if I get stuck, I take a break from it and come back to it the next day. When writing my book, I utilized “power hours” which consisted of me writing as much as I could for an hour of set aside time that I planned using my calendar.

2.     Just as books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
Two authors are a major source of inspiration for me: the incomparable Maya Angelou and Iyanla Vanzant. I love their writing styles and peaceful spirits.

3.    Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I plan to have relocated from my hometown of Chicago and be a successful entrepreneur, teaching and empowering others around the world through my books and speaking engagements.

4.    When did you decide to become a writer? When did you decide to tell your story?

I've been writing all of my life. I actually went to school for journalism, but had to drop out while pregnant.  Poems within my book were written by me between the ages of 17-18 years old. I became more serious about writing my novel in 2015. God started showing me visions of my future and laid it on my heart to share my story in a different capacity and that was through writing.

5.   Any tips on what to do and what not to do as a writer?

The best tips I'd give any writer is to write daily. Use power hours to stay committed to your writing goals. Set a goal of completion to hold yourself accountable. Never give up. Don't be afraid to do what God has called you to do. If He told you to do it, then He'll supply every need.

6.   What is your favorite motivational phrase or scripture?

My book is based on the scripture John 5:30 which starts with, “I can do nothing on my own.” With God, I can do anything. Without Him, I can do nothing. Hence the title “Not By My Own.” This scripture keeps me focused on the vision and purpose God gave me.

7.    What are your current projects?

I currently have a Christian Fiction Novel out, entitled “Not By My Own.” I am also a contributing author on the newest release, “Unraveling the Layers: Memoirs of a Wounded Soul.” Both are available on my website whitdevereaux.com.

8.   Do you do speaking engagements centered around your current book?

I have done some speaking engagements related to my book including an award show and radio show. I look forward to doing more in the future as the Lord leads.

9.  How did you overcome the difficulty when deciding to share your story?

I overcame the difficulties in sharing my story through prayer and fasting and with the help of my publishing consultant who encouraged me not to operate in fear, but to do as God led me. I realize that my life is not my own and everything I went through is to help someone else. Keeping that at the forefront of my mind really helped me to keep pressing on towards the goal.

10.  What was the hardest part of the writing process for you? Why?

The hardest part of writing for me was worrying that I may hurt others with my story. Once I got past the spirit of procrastination, worrying seemed to halt my progress momentarily. My book is a fiction novel based on some facts of my life. I turned facts into fiction to protect others while making sure to educate people on the facts of Domestic Violence Awareness.

Shaniece M. Wise “Activating Your Gifts”

Tell us about your book?

“Activating Your Gifts” is the first workbook in the “Awakening Series. It is designed to aid you in identifying your gift that God has put inside of you. The goal of this workbook is to make you feel uncomfortable in operating in the same place. My prayer is that it causes you to want to shift from a place of being complacent, and challenge you to be exactly what you are supposed to be; no longer just existing, but thriving and living an abundant life. It is designed to make you look at yourself, identify what you enjoy, and allow you to dream again. It is designed to assist you with letting some things go that may be blocking you from your successful future and a life of abundance.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

I came up with my title after writing for a month about my life, what I’ve seen, the different things that I have encountered up until this point. One of the things that stood out to me the most is when I began writing about the different people in my life, the different people that I have been exposed to, built relationships with, either in business or corporate America. I realized that there were so many amazing people out there that were playing small. That they were sleep walking through life. After speaking with them, I would find myself making the same comment and asking the same question “wow you would be great at……, why are you just settling”.

As a Personal and Business Development Coach and Executive Trainer, I work and have worked with so many amazing people who could change the world but are/were playing too small, they are afraid to JUMP and be the person that they are destined to be. I wanted to create a Workbook that people could use to identify their God Given Gifts, activate those Gifts and attach them to the correct vehicles, in order create the type of life that they desire. That is where “Activating Your Gifts” was birthed.

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading your book?

That there is no limit to what they can do when they understand what their true gift it. The goal is to help readers move past their fears, issues, drama, whatever chains have been holding them hostage and walk in freedom. My desire if for this book to help Jump Start all of those amazing readers out there to start dreaming again.

Where can visitors find you online?

What inspired you to write this book?

After death, divorce, depression, trials, and tribulations, I birthed and then ultimately wrote and published a self-help workbook titled “Activating Your Gifts”. In this workbook, I teach the “birthing” techniques that I have had to use on myself in order to deliver and nurture a healthy future after life knocked me off of her feet. I teach techniques on how to identify what makes you happy in life, what your true purpose is, and how you can serve others with your gifts in order to create a life of abundance. I teach that it is okay to be your own authentic self, and how important it is to get over past regrets in order to become the person you are destined to be. There are activities in the book that teach how to develop personally so your professional life can thrive.

What’s next for you?

I am working on my next book and a lot of my time is spent on Coaching Entrepreneurs, Aspiring Entrepreneurs and Professionals, teaching them how to create multiple sources of income using their gifts.

How can someone get a copy of the book?

After years of experience, I transitioned from being an Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, driving the Pink Cadillac, to my purpose, which was developing Coaching Practice where I could change lives all over the world.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

Reflecting over all of the issues, past relationships, situations that were trying to hold me back from achieving success. Digging up old wounds, areas that I thought I fully healed from which made me realize, healing is day to day. It made me look at myself in the mirror and be ok with who I am and how uniquely I was formed. It made me realize it was ok to be different, it was ok to stand out above the crowd.

Did you have to do any special research for your book?

Yes I did do research but the majority came from my 15 years working with entrepreneurs and professionals and reflecting over my own life. My trials, test, tribulations, valleys, mountain tops, successes, failures and life.

Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently?

I come to give you hope. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever write a book. I would always ask myself – how do authors think of things to write about? And now look at me. This is the first of many books for me and I am excited because there is so much I have to share. I want to change as many lives as possible and this is just the beginning.

Can you tell us something we don’t know about you?

I enjoy going to the movies and I love movies with action heroes. Examples: Captain America, Iron Man, The Flash, Super Girl, The Arrow, Batman, Spiderman, Transformers.

When I watch these movies with the characters listed it allows me to escape into their lives and save people. These action heroes save and protect and I absolutely love it. They are ordinary people with unordinary gifts. Gifts that they use to change other people’s life.

I identify myself as the Unstoppable One. That is my action hero name. The reason I chose this name is because I have fallen so many times, and I continue to get back up and press towards my goals.
